  9. The Hierarchical Data Format is a general purpose library and
  10. file format for storing scientific data.
  11. HDF can store two primary objects: datasets and groups. A dataset is
  12. essentially a multidimensional array of data elements, and a group is
  13. a structure for organizing objects in an HDF file. Using these two basic
  14. objects, one can create and store almost any kind of scientific data
  15. structure, such as images, arrays of vectors, and structured and
  16. unstructured grids. You can also mix and match them in HDF files
  17. according to your needs.
